Introduction
My name is Alex Hand. I’m an HR Coordinator for Lutheran Services in Iowa, more commonly known as LSI.
What type of organization is your company?
We are one of Iowa’s largest human service agencies. We are non-profit, serving families and children throughout Iowa.
What are your products/ services?
We provide a broad array of social services including Services for People with Disabilities for children and adults, Home Heath Care services for elderly and individuals with high medical needs, Services to Refugees, Residential Treatment to youth with severe behavioral issues, Early Childhood-working with parents and families with children age 0-5, a variety of in-home services—Behavioral Health Intervention Services/Family Safety Risk and Permanency, and we are a partner organization in IowaKidsNet working with licensing and recruiting for Foster Care. These services impact Iowans ranging in age from infant to elder adult, and we can serve an individual or family through all stages of their life.
 What is the structure of your company?
LSI is located throughout Iowa with offices in about 20 cities. Our largest locations are Dubuque, Davenport, Muscatine, Waterloo, Waverly, Ames, Des Moines, Denison and Sioux City.
Tell me about your company’s history.
LSI has such a rich history, and we are looking forward to 2014 as it marks 150th anniversary. Our history started out in 1864 when a Lutheran pastor opened his home to orphans during the civil war. In 1944 we began focusing on serving children with mental health needs. Throughout the next decades our services grew to include a large variety of in-home services as well as refugee services. In 2003, our 2 predecessor organizations Bremwood and Lutheran Social Service of Iowa merged to form LSI, but we are still standing beside Iowa’s most vulnerable 150 years later.
 How many employees does your company have?
Around 1200 FT, PT and OCC employees
What career fields does your company typically hire in?
We mainly hire for individuals in social work or related fields to work with children and families. We also hire nurses and other health professionals. We also occasionally hire for administrative type positions such as finance, marketing, HR, administrative assistants, etc.  Some positions require human service related degrees, while others just require individuals that are excited to work with children and families.
Describe an ideal candidate for your company.
We are looking for individuals with experience in human services or degrees in the field, but beyond that we want people who are team players, those who are teachable and wanting to learn, compassionate and open minded toward the individuals we serve.

What is the application and interview process for your company?
The starting point is always to fill out an online application at lsiowa.org. Qualified applicants will then be contacted by an HR Coordinator to verify details regarding experience, begin the background check process, and answer any questions applicants may have. Then the top group of applications is sent to our hiring supervisors. Supervisors complete an interview, and HR completes references and additional background checks. The top applicant or applicants is then offered the position.
